The Pacific Marine Science Alliance (PMSA), formerly known as the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society (WCUMSS), is a not-for-profit, registered Canadian charity representing five leading universities.
Founded in 1970, PMSA brings together world-class expertise to advance marine and coastal research, education, and sustainability. Our marine station located in Bamfield, on the rugged west coast of Vancouver Island, supports diverse coastal and marine research of the highest calibre, provides unparalleled access to the Pacific Ocean and is recognized as among the very best research and training facilities in the world.
Welcome to the Pacific Marine Science Alliance (PMSA), formerly known as the Western Canadian Universities Marine Sciences Society.
As Chair of the Board, I am honoured to share our vision for the future of marine science in Canada and beyond. The Pacific Marine Science Alliance exists to advance knowledge of our ocean and coastal environments through collaboration, education, and research.
Our five founding university members are united in their commitment to training the next generation of ocean scientists and applying science-based research to tackle the critical challenges facing marine ecosystems. Together, we form a unique, multi-institutional community that brings the leadership, expertise, and collaboration needed to drive meaningful impact in marine science.
In 2024, PMSA launched a new strategic plan that reaffirms our purpose and sets a bold direction for the next five years. At the heart of this plan is our vision: inspiring transformative relationships with the ocean through science. We are investing in research excellence, inclusive learning, and meaningful partnerships.
The Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) is the PMSA’s most visible and valuable asset — a unique marine station on Canada’s west coast. It serves as the administration and operational heart of the PMSA. It is also a living classroom and research platform for students and scientists from across Canada and around the world. The Board plays a critical role in supporting BMSC’s continued development and ensuring its long-term sustainability, while also guiding the Alliance’s broader strategic direction.
PMSA’s work matters — not just locally, but nationally and globally. As the world faces unprecedented environmental change, organizations like PMSA are essential to finding solutions and training the leaders who will shape them.
We invite you to explore our work, connect with our community, and consider ways you can support our mission. Whether through collaboration, donation, or simply staying informed, your involvement strengthens our impact.
